Always remember that even the daemonic/predator/incubator force came from your will at some point. Otherwise there can be a negative backlash of giving this principle even more power, and this partial understanding can damage your path.

The challenger is an ally as it helps you to find yourself by limiting and defining you. Then you say “I am not that!”, “This is not all that I am!”, “there must be something else!” etc. Your inner self is not trapped by this daemon, but you appear to be in this incarnated perspective. It is by challenge that we find truth.

Wow, just really great intelligent comment and i like Jung lots anyway……..just found this site and Levy after listening to Ground Zero last night……….i’ve been going through this “persecution” after sticking to my “authentic” self (that’s what I think anyway) against a group of several corporations and my superiors and the court etc and their declamations. To me my experience and our collective experience where I live seems so well-explained in “Are We Possessed” article and sections in that article Collective Psychosis and other sections following that I was reading Priscilla (is that right name?) Hayner’s book UNSPEAKABLE TRUTHS about third world atrocities and relating to the feelings and psych of politically repressed and tortured people and though of less severe (at least in the physical sense) torture this forcing a false persona on me has been plenty destructive.

Thank you, Paul. I’ve been struggling with a recent discovery of archetypal possession within our Jungian Men’s Group. The individual is possessed seemingly through a wound in the father complex, which led to an invasion by the Dark King, and possibly even archetypal power of the modern Devil. The possession has the man in the throes of its power, where a visible trance-like state comes over his face, his eyes, posture, voice all change. though almost imperceptibly if one were not aware. Once made aware, however, the affect is remarkable and eerie, The recent birth of a daughter has somehow–perhaps by blood ritual–awakened this man’s heart to the possibility of true love, or a level of intimacy which he now wishes to realize with his wife. This Eros connection is seemingly counter-acting the poison of the archetypal possession, as if human intimacy were the great dissolver of the artificial will to power which our dead-matter culture offers as a substitute for love. In their own way, each respondent above also comments on union through love as an antidote to the reality of pathological possession. Thanks for this oasis in the sand. CJN

Thank you for this article and for others I WILL read. I agree with you wholeheartedly–so far! I just found you.

About twenty years ago a friend gave me a book of Jung’s writings wherein he wrote about lucid dreaming and related it to Keats’s poem ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci,’ which is the only referential hint I have as to what the book was. I cannot remember the title. It was an old book, and I have since not been able to find the article in any of the more modern editions I have of Jung’s collected work (Bollingen Series)which I think I own all of. My friend took the book back and has since died. I feel a very strong need to find this material.

Have you any sense of what I may be looking for? I remember being so undone by what I read that it influenced my spiritual life for months; it helped to enhance my ability to achieve a state of very cognitive dream consciousness.

I will be extremely grateful for any hint you may have of the article in question. The book was entirely of Jung’s writings.

Now I’m going to read more of YOUR writing.

Thanks for the article Paul and especially for weaving Jung’s quotes into your exposition. Some of them I hadn’t come across before. We seem to be living in a time of convergence where seemingly unrelated ideas or events are turning out to be expressions or symbols of the same fundamental process.

Yes! Yes! Yes … to all of the above!
And one more, yes: the original “demon” or the origin of human possessiion is the SUBCONSCIOUS BELIEF IN AND FEAR OF SEPARATION.
With the evolution of thought, language and the self-conscious mind came the illusion of the separated self: “I exist, I am separate, I am limited, I am vulnerable and I am mortal.” The underlying emotions of this demon are EMPTINESS, LONELINESS, FEAR, RESISTANCE and ANGER. The stories that fill the book of human history are the infinite attempts to compensate for this possession, which not only dominates the subconscious, but the DNA, as well. This body of mine, through no choice of my own, has led me to this realization and is in the process of “slaying the demon,” detoxifying itself of the negative energies of separation. What a ride it has been … where the ride will end, God only knows! Pete
