A SYNCHRONISTIC ENCOUNTER: Where Dreams and Waking Life Intersect

Life can be so dreamlike. In the late 1980s, I was working as the Book Service Manager for the C. G. Jung Foundation of New York. One day, one of my customers asked me how come I didn’t carry his books. Wondering who he was, I asked him and he replied, “I’m Dr. Montague Ullman.” Astonished, I realized I was talking to one of the world’s leading experts on dreams.… Read more

WE ARE COMPASSIONATE, WHY ARE YOU KILLING US?

When I first started studying Buddhism over twenty-five years ago, I deeply connected with a number of Buddhist monks from Burma. They were of the “Therevadan” tradition, which is the “way of the elders,” the most ancient Buddhist lineage. They were “forest monks” who lived in the forest and followed as completely as possible the way of the Buddha. They only ate one meal each day by noon and they only ate what was offered to them. The only possessions they owned were a robe and a begging bowl.… Read more

THE STUFF OF WHICH DREAMS ARE MADE

There are, and always have been, those who cannot help but see that the world and its experiences are in the nature of a symbol, and that it reflects something that lies hidden in the subject himself.
~C. G. Jung

Spiritual teachers of every tradition have taught exactly the same thing- that this life of ours is a like a dream. The great teacher Paramahansa Yogananda even goes so far so as to point out that the purpose of our dreams at night is to awaken us to the dream-like nature of the universe.… Read more

TIME TO WAKE UP

There are, and always have been, those who cannot help but see that the world and its experiences are in the nature of a symbol, and that it reflects something that lies hidden in the subject himself.
~C. G. Jung

To quote Jung, “Occasionally reality is quite as archetypal as human fantasy, and sometimes the soul seems to ‘imagine things outside the body,’ where they fall to playing as they do in our dreams.” We are living in a time in which the deeper archetypal, mythic patterns underlying human consciousness are incarnating themselves through us and thereby becoming visible so as to be seen and integrated.… Read more

SPIRITUALLY INFORMED POLITICAL ACTIVISM

Many people are asking me what we can do to make a difference in our current world situation. Like a dream, our situation is fluid, impermanent and multi-dimensional. On one level, we need to connect with each other and stand up against Bush’s policies as much as we are able, as his policies are creating endless unnecessary suffering, deprivation and destruction for millions of people. Bush and Co. are completely mad. They are giving shape and form to what it is to be criminally insane.… Read more

THE APOCALYPSE IS ITS OWN SOLUTION

The imago Dei [God-image] pervades the whole human sphere and makes mankind its involuntary exponent.[i]
~C. G. Jung

We are living in apocalyptic times. Our country and the entire world are in a state of profound dissociation. The opposites being completely split and polarized as they are is an expression of some deeper process emerging and being revealed to us. The inner meaning of the word apocalypse is the “uncovering of what has been hidden.” To quote Jung, “…the sickness of dissociation in our world is at the same time a process of recovery, or rather, the climax of a period of pregnancy which heralds the throes of birth.[ii]… Read more
